40,000 residents and 1200 businesses call Pacific Beach home. Offered to investors for the first time in 1887, Pacific Beach today retains its small town, casual, laid-back feel despite its large population. Bordered on the west by the ocean and on the East by Highway 5, PB, as it is called by the natives, is home to the Crystal Pier and one of the most expansive beaches in all of Southern California. Wherever you turn, you will find residents on the move-on skateboards, in-line skates, and bicycles-many of them carrying surf boards.
Pacific Beach is a mecca for nightlife, with its many restaurants, night clubs, and coffee houses clustered around Garnet Avenue and Mission Boulevard. Yet within blocks, there is a quieter PB. Residents include families, singles, retired folks, and college students. The area has neighborhoods on the flats or in the hills. Beach cottages sit side by side with small complexes of condos and apartments. Right now, Pacific Beach is experiencing a construction boom as many residents expand and update their homes.

In the hills above the coastal plain sits the popular and treasured Kate Sessions Park, a wide open space for picnickers, families with small children, soccer and Frisbee players, and those who simply want to enjoy the view of Mission Bay and Downtown San Diego. Homes in the hills are eclectic in style, and residents enjoy easy access to Highway 5 and points north and south.

On the southern edge of Pacific Beach, Mission Bay, once a mud flat at the mouth of the San Diego River, was dredged following World War II to create San Diego’s outstanding aquatic park. Enjoy sailing, wind surfing, beaches, picnic areas, playgrounds for children, and sunset cruises on the Bay. Families from all over the county gather at Mission Bay for celebrations and picnics. Go to Mission Bay Park on any weekend, and it will feel like you are in a Breughel painting.

Residents of Pacific Beach point with pride to their schools, public library, and many volunteer organizations, which support and promote the community. The population ebbs and flows with the coming and goings of beach and evening traffic, but at the core of PB there is a very strong residential community with old traditions and values.
