Many of America's wealthiest citizens have chosen California's "jewel by the sea", La Jolla, located within the city limits of picturesque San Diego, as their home.

Among the many La Jolla residents are a considerable portion of the Forbes Fortune 400 Richest Americans including the majority of the Hearst family, whereas Hearst castle is located in nearby San Simeon.

One of America's foremost philanthropist families and the founders of our National Spelling Bee, the Scripps family, is from here and the Scripps Institute of Oceanography and Scripps College are two historic institutions that bear their name as well as The Ellen Browning Scripps mansion that houses the Museum of Contemproray Art. Veteran sportscaster Dick Enberg, former Charger kicker hero Rolf Benirschke and the recently retired Doug Flutie are just a few famous residents from the sports world.

La Jolla homes , in addition to being a prime vacation spot in the continental U.S., many movie stars have had retreats here ever since the silent era. Torrey Pines Municipal Golf Course is part of the PGA tour and the Buick Motor Company sponsors the event every sunny February. Until only recently, Deepak Chopra operated his world-known Center for Well Being here and many noted artists, psychologists and philosophers also call La Jolla home.

Longtime New Orleans author Anne Rice recently moved here, but perhaps the most noteable literary resident was Theodore Geisel, Dr. Suess himself, for whom the University of California at San Diego Main Library is named; his widow, Audrey Geisel, still calls La Jolla home. In addition to the area's many libraries, also of special note is the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library. Housed in a one hundred year-old historic building, the music selection availabe on loan is astoundingly impressive.

Every year from June 11-14 the Festival of the Sea is a big event and the Sea of Genes exhibit is a recent attraction that has been opened at the Birch Aquarium. Windansea Beach, La Jolla Cove, La Jolla Beach, the Shores, Scripps, and the clothing-optional Black's Beach number the area's world-class oceanfront beaches.
