Bird Rock actually divides into two areas – one to the east and the other to the west of La Jolla Boulevard. East of the boulevard you will find many young families, first-time homeowners, as well as those who have lived in the area for decades. Originally developed in the 1940’s, many of these single-story beach bungalows remain in their original condition while others have been substantially expanded and turned into two story homes. The annual July 4th parade that winds through Bird Rock and Upper Hermosa is a much anticipated event; children in costume ride home-made floats, skateboards, and bikes down the tree-lined streets. On the west side of the Boulevard, also on small lots, are contemporary oceanfront homes, older homes that have been modernized, and new two-story homes. Lookout points at the ocean’s edge abound in this area. Along La Jolla Boulevard itself, you will find the condominium development known as Seahaus, which is home to many second-home owners.
